On Friday 22nd June 2018, 9 beautiful presentations were delivered in lecture theatre 1.  Although the turn out was not as good as hoped, everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon learning about the hard work and effort in research/audit that the Welsh Ophthalmic Trainees are conducting. 

The quality of all of the presentations were excellent, however Matt Edmunds, our oculoplastics fellow based in UHW was the clear winner with his fascinating talk on “Facial Expression Analysis Software in the Objective Assessment of Perceived Emotional State in Thyroid Eye Disease”.  He showed us how facial recognition software usually used in the marketing/advertising industry can be utilised to determine facial expressions in active and non-active thyroid eye disease, as well as pre and post reconstructive surgery, giving us an objective measure of how these patients are perceived by others, which will clearly have a huge psychological impact on TED patients.

Close runners up were Derek Ho with his innovative gadget talk of “using smartphone-delivered stereoscopic vision in microsurgery” (with a live demonstration of course) and Rhiannon Reynolds also taking advantage of modern technology with her presentation on “OCT Angiography”: Real World Experience in Neovascular AMD New Patient Clinic using the Topcon DRI OCT Triton”.

We are keen to replenish the committee of this society. 

Over the last 2 years, the society has been a key player in ophthalmic training and education in Wales.  

We are unique in that we are completely a trainee-led society and have been instrumental as a portal for all ophthalmic training in this region. 

There have been events organised that have successfully promoted education and training in ophthalmology, with our largest event now a popular course for national and international doctors doing the FRCOPHTH part 2 examination.

We also raised money for Sightsavers last year (more than £1500!) - a charity that helps the visually impaired in developing countries. We work closely with WORC, the Welsh Ophthalmic Research Collaborative -  the first trainee research network in Wales.

We have also produced some exciting online material that you can check out at youtube!

For the first time in a generation, we now have a Wales Eye Ball, which no doubt will foster great personal and working relationships amongst staff in all eye units in Wales.

Miss Claire Morton is a Consultant Ophthalmologist from Abergele, North Wales. She is an excellent mentor to all trainees who go through her department and is an avid volunteer for charity work overseas.

She is a keen supporter of Welsh Ophthalmic Trainee Society events and came second in the ladies category in the annual RCOPHTH congress run 2 years ago. (representing our team the "Welsh Pies")
